Community Composting Workshop

Springfield Compost Collective is holding a community composting informational workshop. This workshop is donation based and requests preregistration through the link provided as to make sure we have a comfortable amount of space for everyone. We know our workshops can get a little crowded which makes our hearts very full but we are trying to make sure everyone has enough room to relax and learn.

The community composting workshop will go over home composting techniques: how to build a proper composting area in your backyard, how to care for the pile, materials needed for a successful composting pile and why, life in the compost (how microorganisms work), how to fix the pile if something is wrong, and applications for compost in your everyday life. We will also go over the services that SCC provides and what we are working on for our community to be more regenerative.

We will provide handouts and a safe space to ask all the questions. Please feel free to reach out to us if you would like us to go over something specific that you would like to learn - like compost tea making or vermicomposting.

VOLUNTEER DAY

SCC is having a volunteer day to help clean recycled food bins that we so kindly received from The Compost Fairy out of Memphis. These 4 gallon bins will be repurposed for our residential food scraps pick up service we are launching this fall. It will be a dirty job so be sure to wear clothes that you can get wet and dirty. We recommend pants and boots. We will provide lunch, water, gloves, and music to jam to. Let us know if you can make it so we have a head count for how much food to bring. We look forward to seeing lots of smiling faces on Saturday at 10am.

Location: The address is for Tom Watkins Community Garden located in Tom Watkins Neighborhood. There is a community garden sign at the entrance and we will be all the way in the back area under the trees. Feel free to park on the road side and walk down or on the side of the driveway/alleyway.

Did you know it takes 25 years for a lettuce head to decompose in a landfill but only a week or so to decompose in a thermal composting pile? Composting is a way for everyone to have a positive impact on the growing food waste problem in our city and country. At this Home Composting workshop we will go over how a compost pile breaks down food and converts it into nutrient rich material for gardens, lawns, and erosion areas; along with the materials needed for a successful compost mound, how to effectively care for a composting area in your backyard, and the uses for compost. Please join us for an evening of composting 101 for your backyard or small business.
